These weavings are from the highlands of Guatemala - made simply on a backstrap loom. Traditionally, the weavings are for much more functional uses, such as clothing, but our offering of wall hanging will bring a unique sampling of the weavers' talents to your home or office! A backstrap loom garners it's name from the fact that the strap is worn around the weaver's waist and tension on the loom is created on the warp by a forward or backward motion. The weaving is done with sticks, thread, rope, and the back strap. The weavings are representative of the locale of the weaver and there are many variations-each one unique in and of itself. In these weavings, you will see patterns and birds, such as the Quetzal, whose feathers were once used to adorn Mayan royalty. (The Quetzal is also the name of the Guatemalan currency) Our weavings are very rustic in nature, with the original sticks in place. A one-of-a-kind gift for anyone!
